From the earliest centuries, the Fathers reflected deeply on the mystery of Christ and the life of his Church. The selections we publish under Quotes & Commentaries draw from their writings and offer brief

reflections that illuminate the vocation of the deacon today. Each quotation is paired with a short commentary that connects the wisdom of the early Church to the ministry of service exercised by deacons in the life of the People of God. In this way, the voices of the Fathers continue to guide and enrich the diaconate’s mission of proclaiming the Gospel, serving at the altar, and caring for those in need.

St. John Chrysostom – Homily 50 on the Gospel of Matthew

This striking observation reminds us that the Church’s worship and her service of charity cannot be separated. The deacon, who stands at the altar and also ministers among the poor, visibly embodies this unity within the life of the Church. When the deacon encounters those who suffer or live on the margins, he encounters Christ who identifies himself with the least of his brothers and sisters (cf. Matthew 25:40). In this way the ministry of charity is never merely humanitarian activity but a participation in the saving love of Christ made present in the Church. The service entrusted to the deacon therefore reveals that authentic Christian worship must bear fruit in works of mercy and compassion. The diaconate thus be-comes a living sign that the Church’s litur-gy must overflow into concrete acts of love for those most in need. In serving the poor, the deacon helps the Christian community recognize Christ’s presence among those who suffer and calls the faithful to a deeper conversion of heart. Through this ministry the Church is reminded that the Eucharistic mystery celebrated at the altar must be lived in daily acts of charity throughout the world.
